Last year the JRAS held a collection trip with a member of the DGIF. The guide demonstrated the use of electro fishing to collect fish samples for study. The guide also was kind enough to identify the different fish species and some interesting facts. Even pointed out some fish diseases and parasites on some of the samples. The fish were safely released after a short period to observe them and ensure they regain full mobility. We got to see some various invertebrate species and aquatic plants. Few members even took home some of the plants to grow in their tanks after quarantining them for several weeks to be safe. Everyone had fun, from grown adults to young children we all had a great time.

Well, the weather is getting warmer and since the first collection trip was so successful they plan on holding some more this spring and summer. If anyone is interested in being notified of when the next trip will be held, just post here on this thread and you'll get a PM(personal message) when we know more details about upcoming trips.

If you know of a good location to hold a meeting at, please let me know. I'll visit the location with some of the club members to evaluate the location and possibly plan a trip there. Ideal locations usually have a healthy population of native fish species and not too many sport fish. Easy access is preferred but a few members will enjoy a challenging expedition if the location turns out to be desirable. Most members were eager to catch darters, madtoms catfish, dace, minnows, and native species that stay small and won't outgrow a 55 gallon tank. My personal favorite to collect have been the redbelly mountain dace and river chubs. Very active and a joy to watch them interact with each other. So start planning that native species tank now and get it cycled to be prepared for this summer' strips.

Tip: Petco is having a dollar per gallon sale in April. Good time to get cheap tanks.
